What is your favorite place in the USA? And why do you like it so much? Wat is jou favoriete plaats in de VS? En waarom vind je dat?
I moved to Portland, OR three years ago and I love it. It was originally built before cars, which is rare for a west coast city, around a river and has a great big city/small town scale. In recent decades waves of young progressives have migrated here from all over the country (coming from places they didn’t feel so welcome like the mid west) and formed a powerful community of creativity and love. To give you an idea of the politics, we recently rejected having fluoride in our municipal water. Portland is the only large city in the US to not have it. Anywhere you go within about a 2 km radius from the center will have all the restaurants, bars and entertainment your heart could desire. It is a beautiful city both inside and out and has a bright future.
Ik ben 3 jaar geleden naar Portland, OR verhuisd en vind het geweldig. Portland werd gebouwd voor de opkomst van de auto, wat zeldzaam is voor een stad aan de westkust, langs een rivier en heeft de gezelligheid van een klein dorp. In de laatste tientallen jaren zijn vele jonge progressieve mensen naar hier verhuisd vanuit alle hoeken van de VS (meestal uit plaatsen waar ze zich niet welkom voelden zoals het midwesten) en vormden een sterke gemeenschap van creativiteit en liefde. Om je een idee te geven van de politiek, we hebben pas het gebruik van fluoride in het water afgeschaft. Portland is de enige grote stad in de VS om dit te doen. Overal waar je gaat in een straal van 2 km van het stadscentrum vind je restaurants, bars en entertainment. Het is een prachtige stad in alle opzichten en heeft een mooie toekomst.

I have never been but have heard that Houston, TX can be pretty rough. The fashion there is high maintenance and you must live your life through the windows of your car. Also, Stockton, CA is a terrible rotting hell in the middle of the most prosperous land in the world. I was once mugged there, hit over the head with a baseball bat, while trying to buy a soda at the corner store.
Ik ben er nooit geweest maar ik heb gehoord dat Houston, TX een ruige stad is. Alles is veeleisend en je moet je leven leiden vanuit je auto. Ook Stockton, CA is een vreselijke plaats in het midden van het meest welvarende land in de wereld. Ik ben er ooit overvallen, op het hoofd geslagen met een baseball bat, toen ik een frisdrank wou kopen bij een kraampje op straat.
If you have to pick one, which state is worth visiting?

I would go to Arizona/New Mexico. There is a strong energy from pre colonials still alive there and I would try to pick up on that. The landscape is not the most dramatic in the US but an ethereal mountainous desert none the less. A great place to have a relaxed road trip.
Ik zou naar Arizona/New Mexico gaan. Er hangt daar een sterke energie van afstammelingen voor de kolonisatie die er nog leven, en ik zou die sfeer gaan opsnuiven. Het landschap is niet het meest dramatische van de VS, maar toch lijkt het een buitenaards berglandschap. Een fantastische plaats voor een road trip.
If you ask a European about real American food, they will probably start talking about fast-food. What can you tell us about American cuisine?
Als je een Europeaan vraagt naar echt Amerikaans eten, beginnen ze waarschijnlijk over fastfood. Wat kan je ons vertellen over de Amerikaanse keuken?
American cuisine is all over the map. Unfortunately, when you are on a road trip you tend to be on highways and stop at strip malls where boring, unhealthy, bland food chains are. You have to find the smaller streets in towns or cities where locals can walk to. There the food will be amazing. It could be anything though from Vietnamese soup to southern pulled pork sandwiches.
De Amerikaanse keuken kan je overal proeven. Spijtig genoeg stop je tijdens een road trip meestal langs de snelweg bij een shoppingcenter met saaie, ongezonde ketens. Je moet de kleine straatjes in de steden en dorpen opzoeken, waar ook de inwoners komen. Het eten zal er fantastisch zijn. Het kan alles zijn van Vietnamese soep tot een zuiders broodje met kip.

In-N-Out Burger. It is a real fast-food chain, not a boutique chain, but the quality is very high. Its only on the west coast I think.

Do you have an advice for people willing to come to the USA?
Heb je tips voor mensen die de VS willen bezoeken?
Dont try to do too much. Find a nice area or destination like Yosemite and spend some time enjoying it. The scale of distance between cities here is much greater than in Europe and you don’t want to spend all your time in a car trying to get to a bunch of different spots.
Probeer niet teveel te doen. Zoek een fijne bestemming, zoals Yosemite en neem je tijd om er van te genieten. De afstanden tussen steden is hier veel groter dan in Europa en je wil niet al je tijd spenderen in je auto om op zoveel mogelijk plaatsen te komen.
